Christian Spirituality
The spirituality emphasis is highly experiential, as students practice the various spiritual disciplines they study in class. In addition to the core curriculum, Comprehensive Seminar, and electives of their own choosing, students in this emphasis do Supervised Ministry in settings that develop gifts in such areas as spiritual direction or retreat ministry. In this ministry emphasis, students take four courses in the spirituality area of the curriculum, as well as the required core course, Spiritual Preparation for Ministry. Those four courses may be chosen from among the other spirituality offerings such as Individual Spiritual Direction, Prayer, History of Christian Spirituality, Quaker Spirituality, and Spiritual Formation in the Contemporary Congregation. Before doing Supervised Ministry, students who choose this emphasis undertake an extended (no less than eight days), personal, directed spiritual retreat. Finally, the student participates in ongoing spiritual direction for a minimum of 24 sessions in a period of no more than two calendar years.
