PRAYER & OUR BODIESThe body-mind-spirit connection to wellness was first recognized by physicians and theologians centuries ago. Of course, Jesus showed us the way, as He healed the sick through the laying on of hands, a healing ministry that also restored souls. The Early Church continued to emphasize this vital ministry. Over time, however, this part of our religious heritage has been neglected. In the last 10 years, religious and medical communities have reawakened to the critical spiritual element in physical recovery. This year, ESR ’s Spirituality Gathering will focus on that connection from a variety of perspectives. Our keynote speaker, Julie Murray, will give two addresses. There will also be two opportunities to participate in small-group workshops on music and its renewing gifts, spiritual insights from running/hiking, Christian approaches to yoga and energy work, praying with our bodies, table fellowship as a spiritual practice from the NT, spirituality and disabilities, and a labyrinth walk. The day-long event will include worship, keynote presentations, small-group workshops, lunch, and time to browse through our “bookshop.” For three years, persons interested in the field of spirituality have gathered at ESR to investigate new topics, share their wisdom, network and experience spiritual renewal. Come join us March 6, 2004, for another day of refreshment for the body, mind and spirit! KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Julie M. Murray has served as spiritual director, retreat leader, supervisor, teacher, and workshop presenter for twenty-seven years. For seventeen years, as a staff member at the Jesuit Renewal Center, Milford, Ohio, Julie led the way in creative innovation in women’s spirituality. Julie has also led numerous retreats and facilitated international internships in spiritual direction. Since 1994, she has combined various forms of energy healing work with spiritual direction. Julie now offers “Holistic Spiritual Direction” as a full-time ministry. She is co- founder of The Center Within, which offers holistic retreats in the Cincinnati area and is on the faculty of the Barbara Brennan School of Healing. WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS "Healing Meditation," Rev. Dr. Daryl C. Greene Explore the theory and practice of meditation for the healing of body, mind and spirit. Discuss eight meditation techniques used to reduce stress, relieve pain, foster healing and discern new direction, meaning and purpose in life, as presented in Dr. Greene's book, "You Can Feel Better". Experience a guided meditation that integrates traditional Christian imagery with imagery developed by modern medical science. "Prayer & Our Bodies," Stephanie Ford In this workshop, we will explore key ideas from Flora Slosson Wuellner's books about how our bodies guide us to pray. Our bodies may invite us to pray, may reveal blocks in our spirit, and may offer us insights into God's will for our lives. Wuellner helps us to "tune in" to our body-soul relationship and to hear God in new ways. In the workshop, we will learn a couple of body prayers, and you will be invited to participate in a guided meditation. "Prayerful Touch," Jackie Speicher Energy worker Jackie Speicher will introduce a method of incorporating prayer and spiritual intentionality into any form of healing energy work, thus making it more accessible to persons of a variety of faith traditions. She will demonstrate invocation building, nurturing of a state of open worship in the Quaker tradition (silent attentiveness to Divine guidance), and use of a closing benediction. Participants will also have the opportunity to learn a simple form of energy work appropriate for use on self, family and friends. "Spiritual Steps," Carol Sexton Since ancient times, in cultures around the world, the labyrinth has been a symbol for pilgrimage, spiritual journey, and connection with the divine. The labyrinth invites us to enter with body, mind and spirit open to divine guidance as we reflect prayerfully on the path we have taken and gather wisdom and strength for the way that lies ahead. In this workshop, we'll use a Christian form of the labyrinth which is painted on canvas and replicates a medieval design from the floor of Chartres cathedral in France. Come and walk the labyrinth at your own pace as you discern the next steps on your journey. "Spirit and the Art of Pilgrimage (FKA 'Journals and Journeys')," Steve Spyker 2002 Appalachian Trail thru-hiker Steve Spyker will share a little of his experience walking the AT, leading participants through an exploration of the spiritual discipline of walking toward a destination. Weather permitting we may even do a little walking. Bring sensible shoes, your favorite hat, a sturdy walking stick (if you have one), and your love of the outdoors!
