Welcome and plenary session: Rufus Jones and the Twentieth Century Quaker Journals - Stephen Angell

The plenary presentation will use Rufus Jones’s autobiographical works and the scholarship on Quaker journals by Rufus and other twentieth century Friends as a lens through which to ponder the continuities and changes in conceptions of what lives of faithful Quaker ministry and service looked like.

Workshop (choose one)

A: Rufus Jones' Autobiographical Writings – Stephen Angell

We will look at excerpts from Rufus Jones’s published and unpublished autobiographical writings to gain a deeper understanding of Jones’s view of faithful lives of Quaker ministry and service in the modern age. We will also consider the extent to which his vision is applicable to our twenty-first century.
Workshop Leader: Stephen W. Angell is the Leatherock Professor of Quaker Studies at Earlham School of Religion. He has written several books and articles on the subjects of Quakerism and African-American Religion, including “Rufus Jones and the Laymen’s Foreign Mission Inquiry: How a Quaker Helped to Shape Modern Ecumenism” in Quaker Theology Autumn 2000, or online at www.quaker.org/quest.

B: Reading a Quaker Classic: Fox’s Journal and the Bible – Susan Jeffers

In this workshop we will read George Fox’s Journal alongside the biblical book of the Acts of the Apostles. We will sit with the question of how our own “praxis” (practices or “acts”) might be Spirit led and turned to the Light, even as Fox records his own leadings and turnings. Bring a Bible (any version).
Workshop Leader: Susan Jeffers teaches Quaker Studies courses as adjunct faculty for ESR, and Biblical Studies courses for Bethany Theological Seminary and other Church of the Brethren institutions. She graduated from ESR in 1999 with an MA in Biblical Studies.

C: Journals of Quaker Women – Mary Garman

Since the earliest days of the movement, Quaker women have kept journals to chronicle their travels, record their inner struggles, and inspire future generations. We will explore journals from various periods of Quaker history, looking for distinctive qualities and common traits and a deeper appreciation of these Quaker women’s lives.
Workshop Leader: Mary Garman teaches in the Religion Department at Earlham College, and occasional courses at the Earlham School of Religion. She is an ESR graduate (’77) and has served among Friends as a pastor.
